Happy Birthday!!! It’s always a good time to celebrate your birthday. You get to hangout with family and friends, receive presents, enjoy good food, and have a day dedicated to you. With food sensitivities, it’s a little bit more of a struggle and a little frustrating when people give you gifts revolving food. You want to accept the gift and be excited about it, but don’t know if you should say anything if you receive a food item you can’t eat. Of course, it’s a thoughtful gift and you’re thankful for it, but it will most likely go to waste if you can’t eat it. At work, they usually give the birthday person a cupcake, but I can’t eat that. They know about my sensitivites and know I can’t eat those kind of cupcakes, so they asked what can they get me and I said candy like Skittles, so I lucked out there, but what if they didn’t know? It would’ve been an awkward exchange and I would’ve gotten sad about it.
One way my family likes to celebrate is to go out to eat. Well, with the food sensitivities I have, there isn’t really many places I can eat at, so where do we go? I decided to go to Five Guys because they cook their fries in peanut oil, which means I can actually eat them, but it’s a fast food restaurant compared to a sit down restaurant where you can relax and take your time. I was only able to eat the fries and a milkshake, which I’m okay with and enjoyed it with no problems, but it’s not really a meal where I can get all my nutrients and eat something more healthy, but I guess it’s hard to complain when there’s fries I can eat and enjoy.
Many people get cake for their birthday, but I can’t go to a bakery and get one; I think it’s too complicated to ask and make sure that it doesn’t have canola oil or soy lecithin in it, so I’m better off making my own. The good news is that I love baking and I love decorating cakes, so I get to make it to my liking and draw something fun and creative on my cake. The only problem with making your own cake is that you don’t know how it is going to come out and whether it will be delicious or a disaster. My favorite type of cake is chocolate and I found a recipe that I love and have made in the past where it is absolutely delicious every time I make it, so that’s what I went with. It ended up being perfectly made and was very tasty, so I lucked out there. The writing and decoration got a little smudged and messed up from the plastic wrap, but that’s okay because only my family saw it and it still tasted great.
At the end of the day, my birthday was still a great day and a time well spent with family. It was pretty fun and the weather was beautiful. I was able to let go of things we used to do that we couldn’t do because of my sensitivites and enjoy the day with good, safe food, delicious cake, beautiful weather, and being surrounded by family. It doesn’t get any better than that. Forget about the things you can’t do and enjoy what you can while celebrating your birthday. You only celebrate once a year, so why not make it a day to remember?
